DEFACTO: a project to revolutionize the EU electric vehicles industry
On January 14th, the European project DEFACTO kicked off with a two-day meeting hosted by the project coordinator CIDETEC in San Sebastián, Spain.
This is the first proposal granted that has been entirely elaborated by the Innovation Management department at Sustainable Innovations Europe (SIE), following its creation in 2018. The team worked closely with CIDETEC in its coordination and writing. In addition, SIE is also a key partner of the consortium, being responsible for the project’s communication, dissemination, capacity building and exploitation activities. This includes, among other actions, the elaboration and implementation of several strategies to ensure that the outcomes reach the relevant stakeholders and benefit the European industry. SIE’s main goal is to bring the project results to the maximum amount of European manufacturing SMEs, based on DEFACTO’s strategy of open innovation.
DEFACTO is a project funded by the European Commission Horizon 2020 Programme that seeks to revolutionize the way in which the cell manufacturing industry for electric vehicles has worked so far. As of today, companies incur in high laboratory and personnel costs to improve the design and manufacturing process of cells. In this sense, DEFACTO will implement a multidisciplinary method that combines laboratory work, prototyping and multiphysic and multiscale modeling. This will allow, on the one hand, to accelerate the research and innovation processes on cell development, optimizing their design and functionality and, on the other, to significantly increase the competitiveness of the European industry.
Additionally, DEFACTO seeks to encourage and accelerate the decarbonisation of transport, as 96% of this industry still depends on fossil fuels. This is in line with the purpose of the European Union to achieve a smarter and more ecological transport system that meets the growing mobility needs of the society, while reducing carbon emissions and increasing energy efficiency.
